I am so excited about homeschooling this year! I get a few emails about what type of curriculum we are using for this coming year, so I thought I would give you some answers! I have put a lot of thought into our curriculum this year and I am very happy with our choices. Being able to choose my own curriculum according to the needs and learning styles of my girls is one of the best parts about homeschooling.
Sophia will be turning 3 years old next month and she loves to do "school". The girl is crazy about coloring and cutting so I HAVE to incorporate a lot of it into our schooling. I am so happy that I can create her own curriculum! Here is what is on our list:
Sophia does well with her letter sounds, but the pictures associated with the phonics sounds will really help solidify this concept. She really enjoys these, so it will be fun to incorporate them on a weekly/daily basis. She is going to LOVE the coloring part!
Like I said, the girl is nuts about cutting! She seriously wants to cut EVERYTHING! It actually concerns me a bit:) Hopefully our ABC Cut and Paste Fonts will help meet her needs:) This pack is great for identifying various fonts in different context.
There are so many great little mini-books that Sophia will be able to make from this one printable! She will be able to work on her ABC's (upper and lower case, numbers, shapes and colors!) We are really going to stretch this pack out!
Sophia is not at all ready for our Ready2Read program, but she has sounded out words. I think our Peek-a-Boo books will work well to help her isolate each phoneme and really grasp the concept. Popping open these little mini-books will make is a super fun way for her to phonetically learn simple CVC words. We will probably start this printable after Christmas:)
I think our CVC build a word mats will be a good start with the lower level (option 1). This will be great for one-to-one correspondence. I don't think she is ready to fully build the CVC words (option 2) yet, but this is a good place to start.
I am so happy that our ABC Tic-Tac-Toe boards are already printed out and ready to go! I will probably be using just the tile letters with Sophia, since she is not really ready to start printing her letters. Audrey will be using the printing portion to help with handwriting.
We will also be doing a lot of activities from a book called,
Great Explorations. Although this book is "ideal for keeping kids occupied on a rainy day," I really find so many activities that are loads of FUN!
Audrey just turned 5 in June. I don't really like to choose my curriculum based only on age, but rather her specific needs:)
Reading
We should be starting this in a couple of weeks since Mommy is STILL frantically working on getting more units done:) It really makes me happy that she LOVES to read and learn.
*Note: Although Audrey is in Kindergarten, Level 3 is designed to meet Common Core Standards for 1st grade.
Spelling
Since our Ready2Read program incorporates a strong phonics component,
All About Spelling will be a perfect compliment! I am extremely happy with this spelling choice.
Writing
Audrey loves to write and I really feel that it is important for her to have a specific writing program. We are using
Write Shop Book A and will start Book B after Christmas.
Book A
Math
I will be honest, math curriculum was a difficult choice for me and I really researched my choices. I decided that
Math-U-See would work well for Audrey. We will be beginning with the Alpha set.
Science
I absolutely love the book called Science Play! The activities in this book are for children ages 2-6, so both girls will really enjoy it! All of the lessons/activities in this book are hands-on learning! I think I picked mine up for 50 cents at our local library. They have a few on Amazon {
HERE}.
Bible
I was considering this curriculum for the girls and it was totally confirmed from one of my readers:)
This curriculum really does look great and I am super excited to use it!!
We will also be working on the States, Continents and a few more specific areas of content, but we will not introduce these unit after Christmas.
That's about it for now:) I am so thankful that I can pick my girls' curriculum and adjust it as I see fit. This was not one of the luxuries that I had when I was teaching in the classroom.
