2012-2013 Curriculum Choices

I am so excited about homeschooling this year!  I get a few emails about what type of curriculum we are using for this coming year, so I thought I would give you some answers!  I have put a lot of thought into our curriculum this year and I am very happy with our choices.  Being able to choose my own curriculum according to the needs and learning styles of my girls is one of the best parts about homeschooling.

Sophia (Preschool)
Sophia will be turning 3 years old next month and she loves to do "school".     The girl is crazy about coloring and cutting so I HAVE to incorporate a lot of it into our schooling.  I am so happy that I can create her own curriculum!   Here is what is on our list:

Sophia does well with her letter sounds, but the pictures associated with the phonics sounds  will really help solidify this concept.  She really enjoys these, so it will be fun to incorporate them on a weekly/daily basis.  She is going to LOVE the coloring part!

Like I said, the girl is nuts about cutting!  She seriously wants to cut EVERYTHING!  It actually concerns me a bit:)  Hopefully our ABC Cut and Paste Fonts will help meet her needs:)  This pack  is great for identifying various fonts in different context.

There are so many great little mini-books that Sophia will be able to make from this one printable!  She will be able to work on her ABC's (upper and lower case, numbers, shapes and colors!)  We are really going to stretch this pack out!

Sophia is not at all ready for our Ready2Read program, but she has sounded out words.  I think our Peek-a-Boo books will work well to help her isolate each phoneme and really grasp the concept.  Popping open these little mini-books will make is a super fun way for her to phonetically learn simple CVC words.  We will probably start this printable after Christmas:)

I think our CVC build a word mats will be a good start with the lower level (option 1).  This will be great for one-to-one correspondence.  I don't think she is ready to fully build the CVC words (option 2) yet, but this is a good place to start.

I am so happy that our ABC Tic-Tac-Toe boards are already printed out and ready to go!  I will probably be using just the tile letters with Sophia, since she is not really ready to start printing her letters.  Audrey will be using the printing portion to help with handwriting.

We will also be doing a lot of activities from a book called, Great Explorations.  Although this book is "ideal for keeping kids occupied on a rainy day," I really find so many activities that are loads of FUN!

Audrey (Kindergarten)

Audrey just turned 5 in June.  I don't really like to choose my curriculum based only on age, but rather her specific needs:)

Reading
We should be starting this in a couple of weeks since Mommy is STILL frantically working on getting more units done:)  It really makes me happy that she LOVES to read and learn.
*Note:  Although Audrey is in Kindergarten, Level 3 is designed to meet Common Core Standards for 1st grade.

Spelling
Since our Ready2Read program incorporates a strong phonics component, All About Spelling will be a perfect compliment!  I am extremely happy with this spelling choice.

Writing
Audrey loves to write and I really feel that it is important for her to have a specific writing program.  We are using Write Shop Book A and will start Book B after Christmas.
Book A

Math
I will be honest, math curriculum was a difficult choice for me and I really researched my choices.  I decided that Math-U-See would work well for Audrey.  We will be beginning with the Alpha set.

Science
I absolutely love the book called Science Play!  The activities in this book are for children ages 2-6, so both girls will really enjoy it!  All of the lessons/activities in this book are hands-on learning!  I think I picked mine up for 50 cents at our local library.  They have a few on Amazon {HERE}.

Bible
I was considering this curriculum for the girls and it was totally confirmed from one of my readers:)
This curriculum really does look great and I am super excited to use it!!

We will also be using the Big Book of Bible Crafts and Play and Learn Bible Games for some extra fun:)

We will also be working on the States, Continents and a few more specific areas of content, but we will not introduce these unit after Christmas.

That's about it for now:)  I am so thankful that I can pick my girls' curriculum and adjust it as I see fit.  This was not one of the luxuries that I had when I was teaching in the classroom.

It looks great. I can't wait to see your math program and how you use Science Play. I have that book, so I will be interested in seeing how you use it. And of course...Ready2Read at any level is a great program and I am anxious to see your Ocean. Thanks for sharing.

I'm an elementary educator turned homeschooler as well and we are using The Bible Study Guide for All Ages and it is FABULOUS! My kids never ever ever complain about Bible and what they are learning is awesome. I purchased the primary level for my 4 and 5 year olds (which has required teacher's books to accompany them) and the intermediate for my oldest which does not require the teacher's manuals. My 5 yr. old can read, but I didn't want him bogged down in writing so I picked this level for him...great choice on my part. My oldest is capable of the the highest level, but again, I wanted this to be low pressure so that they would want to focus on the lesson being learned. There is a ton of meat to this program. Totally look into it. It is awesome!!! I think there is even a level below the primary level that would be good for your youngest. We did not buy the large timeline because the primary level and up have the entire timeline printed on every other lesson. We did buy the cd set and the Bible summary cards and they are both great resources. They are truly enjoying Bible so much. It is very easy to plan and implement for the teacher as well.

Here's a snippet of what can be accomplished. After the 3rd week of school, my 4 year old can name the 66 books of the Bible (ok, he could do this already), summarize the entire book of Genesis, name the 12 sons of Jacob, identify on a map Canaan, the Jordan River, the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea, Egypt, and the Nile River (even when they are not labeled). On the timeline he can identify when time began, where certain events we've learned about take place, when Jesus was born and died, and where he falls on the timeline in relation to other Bible events. He's learned which parts of the Bible relate to Jesus is coming, which ones relate to Jesus is here, and which ones relate to Jesus is coming again. And finally, he can name all the new testament writers. There aren't a lot of adults that can do that.

Not to mention, every lesson has an apply it section where they learn to apply something to their own lives (like caring for others or asking God for wisdom...this lesson comes from the Bible story of the day). There is also a "get active" section that is usually a hands on activity to help the kids apply the lesson to their own lives. It encourages the kids to pray every single day and helps them think of specific things to pray that go along with what they are learning. Best curriculum choice I made this year.

I know it sounds like I work for them, but really I just love it so much and would encourage even non-homeschoolers to buy it for their in home Bible study. Sorry for such a long comment. I've been reading for a long time and I subscribe but I don't usually comment...this one was just too hard to not comment on. HA!

Brandy...THANK YOU! This was actually one of the two choices that I was considering! If I would have read your review earlier, I would have already ordered it! Ordering it now and adding it to our choices:) Really...I appreciate this so much!!

I love your curriculum! I too enjoy picking out what works best for my son. The great thing is you can also change and adapt as the year goes. How blessed we are to be homeschoolers!
I love your bible curriculum! I have been doing tons of searching trying to find something that would fit for my son. I have already checked into yours and it sounds wonderful! We may have to give this one a try.
Thanks!

I am thrilled for you as you begin your wonderful homeschool journey, even though you have been homeschooling since birth :)There is something special about teaching your own children that can never be explained in words. What a reward for a teacher and parent when you see it finally click and the light bulb go off or when they are hooked on a subject. And I LOVE all your choices of curriculum! Of course, your's is my favorite. ☺

Thanks for sharing your Kinder curriculum choices. Of course my fave is your Ready2Read program. My DD 5 is reading beautifully and we're just about ready for Level 3 now too.;) I expect that the writing and spelling resources you shared will help a lot, so I purchased those today. My DD is super excited about getting to continue to learn with the Moffatt Girls!
