I am gearing up for the fall and I have a little packet that I am going to introduce to help teach CVC words: CVC Peek-a-Boo Books! One of the most common "problems" that occur when teaching CVC words is that students will sound out the first 2 letters and then guess on the last letter.
For example: You have the CVC word C-A-N and you are helping a student sound out the word. It is very common for early readers to "assume" the ending sounds and sound out the /c/ and /a/ and then put a t at the end, making the word CAT.
These CVC Peek-a-Boo Books are a great way to isolate each sound and practice blending the words before revealing the picture/answer. It is also LOTS of FUN! I gave one to Sophia since she knows all her sounds. She grabbed the book and plucked off each clothespin and sounded out the letters, but no blending happened today:) She was so excited that she said, "Are these my printables?" Then she grabbed more and ran away:)
This packet includes 42 CVC Peek-a-Boo Books and 42 matching CVC words with pictures. Using the Peek-a-Boo books helps eliminate guessing and encourages students to blend simple CVC letters to discover the hidden picture.
Here is how these books work:
