Number Balance REVIEW and GIVEAWAY!

I was super excited when Homeroom Teacher asked me to review a couple of their products and they are generously giving one away to The Moffatt Girls readers!!!  Whoo-Hooo!

Homeroom Teacher offers a variety of teaching supplies at discounted prices.  I was pleased and overwhelmed with the vast number of products that they carry, but I finally settled on a product that I am ecstatic to have in our "classroom," Number Balance (K-3rd Grade).  This product has really helped make math become a visual and hands-on learning experience, which has made math so much FUN!

YOU CAN WIN YOUR OWN NUMBER BALANCE TOO!!

Since a picture speaks a thousands words, I took out my camera and captured Audrey's thought process with this new manipulative.

She began by using our Graph the Math worksheets.   After reading the number sentence she used her new Number Balance to determine if the calculations were correct.  Did they balance out?

She waited and watched.  When it didn't balance out, she figured she had made a mistake and then tried various ways of solving the equation.  In this case, she quickly told me that 4+2=7.  I let her see that the answer was wrong and then she moved on to correct her mistake.

She used her finger to add the numbers and compare her new answer to her old answer.  She immediately saw her mistake and proudly proclaimed that 4+2=6, not 7.

She went on to Graph the Math on her sheet when the equation was balanced.  I LOVE this product because it is self correcting and really helps when kids are in a hurry to get an answer, even when it is wrong:)  It helps them SEE the math equation!

This tool was also a great opportunity for Audrey to see that 4+2=6 is the same as 2+4=6.  She really understood the meaning of a fact family relationship.

After balancing her equations, she colored in the matching sums the same colors and then graphed them on her sheet.

Annie-
I love those lightbulb moments. What a proud teacher/mommy moment.

This balance looks like it could be effective to see how numbers can be more, less, or equal.
